How Google's AI Started Citing Our New Website in 16 Days
Sixteen days after we finished rebuilding this site, Google's AI answers were citing it. Here is the full record, with dates, including the part that went wrong.
We finished rebuilding this website on September 7, 2026. Sixteen days later, Google's AI answers were citing it as a source. When we published a new page about Roseville, the AI was citing that page the next day.
We market law firms for a living, so we ran this the way we would run it for a client: write down what we did, screenshot what happened, and keep the dates. Here is the whole record, including the part that went wrong.
What a citation from Google's AI looks like
Google now answers many searches itself before it shows a list of websites. The summary box at the top of the results is called an AI Overview. The chat-style tab beside the regular results is called AI Mode. Both write an answer, and both show the pages that answer came from.
A citation is when your page is one of those sources, or when the answer names your firm. For someone asking where to find a lawyer, that answer is often the first thing they read, and sometimes the only thing.
What Google's AI said about us
On September 30, 2026, we searched "law firm seo roseville ca" in AI Mode on a phone. The answer listed Local Law Marketing among the local providers, with our own card, a Call button, and a Website button. It described us as a Roseville-based team that handles websites, local maps, reviews, and AI search for Placer County attorneys, and it cited our Roseville page as a source.
That description is accurate, and we did not write that sentence. Google's AI assembled it from what our pages say.
Five days earlier, the AI Mode answer for "law firm marketing roseville ca" included a section on costs. It said that Local Law Marketing "publishes clear transparent pricing structures," then listed our prices and linked to our Roseville page. We checked every number it gave against our pricing guide. All of them were right.
The timeline
September 7: the last page of the rebuilt site went live.
September 23: AI Mode answers cited our homepage and our Who We Serve page as sources. That is day 16.
September 24: we published a page about law firm marketing in Roseville.
September 25: that page was the first source listed under Google's AI answer for "law firm marketing roseville ca." The same day, the AI Overview for our company name began naming us and linking to the site, and AI Mode quoted our prices.
September 30: AI Mode listed us by name, with our own card, for "law firm seo roseville ca."
What we did that made the site easy to cite
We cannot see inside Google's systems, and anyone who says they can is guessing. What we can do is show you what we built and what the AI repeated back.
We wrote pages that each answer one question. Our Roseville page is about Roseville, written by people who live here. It is not a general services page with a city name dropped in.
We published our prices. Most agencies make you book a call to hear a number. Ours are on the site, and the costs section of that AI answer used them because they were there to use. The full breakdown is in what law firm marketing actually costs in 2026.
We said who we are the same way everywhere. One company name, one city, and one phone number, on the site and on every profile. We also added structured data, a short block of code that tells search engines in their own format which business this is and which area it serves.
We wrote in questions and answers. Our service pages end with the questions attorneys really ask, each answered in two or three sentences. That format is easy for a person to scan and easy for an AI system to quote. Our decoder on GEO and AEO explains why.
None of that is a trick. It is the same work that has always made a page worth ranking, done carefully, and it is the core of our SEO and AI search service.
What went wrong
For a few days in late September, an AI Overview showed a card with our name on it and another agency's photo, star rating, and website button. Anyone who tapped that button landed on a competitor's site.
The cause was on our side. Our Google Business Profile was verified but was not yet showing to the public, so when Google's AI wanted a local listing to go with our name, it borrowed the nearest one. By September 30, the AI Mode answer above showed a card with our own details.
The lesson for a law firm: AI answers are assembled from several places, and your Business Profile is one of them. If yours is missing, thin, or out of date, the AI does not leave a blank. It improvises. That is one reason profile work sits at the center of our local search and reviews service.
What this does not prove
AI answers change from one search to the next. The same question can produce a different answer an hour later, with different sources. Every result above is a dated screenshot, not a permanent ranking.
A citation is not a client. We are tracking whether these mentions turn into calls and into more people searching for us by name, and those are the numbers that count. For the Roseville search, we are cited in the AI answer and still not on the first page of the regular results. Both things are true at once.
And the site is new. Sixteen days is fast, but we built it knowing what these systems look for. A site carrying years of thin pages has cleanup to do first.
How to check your own firm in five minutes
Open Google on your phone in a private tab and type the question a client would ask, such as "divorce lawyer in" followed by your city. Read the AI answer at the top. Note which firms it names, then tap the sources to see which pages it used.
Then search your firm's name and read what the AI says about you. If it is wrong, thin, or about someone else, that is worth knowing today.
If you would like a second set of eyes, send us your firm's name and city. We will run the searches, screenshot what the AI says, and tell you what we would fix first.
Frequently asked questions
-
An AI Overview is the summary Google places at the top of regular search results. AI Mode is a separate tab where the whole page is a written answer, and you can ask follow-up questions. Both show the sources they drew from.
-
Ours was cited 16 days after the rebuilt site went live, and one new page was cited the day after we published it. Your timing depends on how clear your pages are, how established your firm's profiles are, and how much competition your city has.
-
No. Google decides what its AI says, and the answers change constantly. What an agency can do is make your firm easy to understand, easy to verify, and worth quoting. Be wary of anyone promising a placement.
-
It puts your firm's name in front of people at the moment they are asking for help, which is valuable. Whether it becomes calls depends on what they find when they tap through: your reviews, your website, and how easy it is to reach you.
