What law firm marketing actually costs in 2026

Most law firm marketing agencies will not tell you what anything costs until they have you on a call. That is a sales tactic, not a pricing structure, and it wastes your time.

So here are the actual numbers. What the market charges, what drives the price up and down, what the cheap end really buys, and where we sit in it.

The short answer

For genuine full-service search work, most law firms pay between about $2,500 and $6,000 a month. Solo attorneys covering a single county sit at the low end. Firms competing across a metro area or in a crowded practice area sit above it. Published industry surveys put the overall average somewhere near $4,900 a month, though that figure includes large firms with budgets most practices will never need.

Below roughly $1,500 a month you are no longer buying the same service, which is a separate discussion further down.

Websites are usually priced as a one-time project rather than monthly, generally $5,000 to $15,000 for a real one. Social media management, review programs, and Google Business Profile work are typically billed separately on top.

What actually moves the price

Your practice area

Estate planning and probate are comparatively quiet. Family law and criminal defense sit in the middle. Personal injury is a knife fight, and pricing reflects that, because the firms you are competing against are spending accordingly.

Your market size

Ranking in a county of eighty thousand people is a different project than ranking in Los Angeles. Local campaigns cost meaningfully less than regional ones, and regional costs less than statewide.

How many practice areas you run

Each one needs its own pages, its own content, and its own competitive picture. A firm doing three things is roughly three projects sharing a website.

What shape you are starting in

A firm with a clean site and consistent listings is cheaper to work with than one carrying eight years of accumulated mess from three previous vendors. The second is more common.

Who is doing the work

An agency in Manhattan charges more than one in the Midwest. An agency that outsources writing overseas charges less than one that does not. You are usually paying for where the labor sits.

What the cheap end actually buys

You will see offers at $500 to $800 a month. The arithmetic does not work at that price. Genuine search work means content written by someone who understands the subject, technical monitoring, and ongoing adjustment. None of that fits inside a few hundred dollars a month.

What you get instead is templated software output, low-grade generated text, and bulk directory submissions that create the appearance of activity. It shows up as movement in a report and as nothing in your intake numbers.

This matters more in legal than in other industries, because thin generated content on a law firm site is not just ineffective. It can create problems with your state bar, and you are the one whose license is attached to it.

The AI optimization upcharge

Here is one worth watching for in 2026. A lot of agencies have started selling AI search optimization as a separate line item, commonly quoted at another $2,000 to $8,000 a month on top of an existing SEO retainer.

Be skeptical of that. Search optimization and AI visibility share the same technical foundation and the same content. Separating them into two invoices is a pricing decision, not a delivery decision. Ask any agency proposing it what the second retainer buys that the first one does not, and see whether the answer holds up.

Hire a partner, not a salesperson.

What to actually ask before you sign

Who is writing the content, and are they in the United States. What happens in month one, specifically. How do you measure this, and does the measurement connect to intake or only to rankings. What is the term, and what happens if I want out. Who do I talk to when something goes wrong, and is it the same person doing the work.

Any agency that gets uncomfortable answering those is telling you something.

Where we sit

Our search and content program starts at $1,850 a month. Larger firms and additional practice areas run higher.

Before that begins, most firms need a Foundation Retainer. That is a one-time ninety-day cleanup covering consistency across everywhere your firm appears online, plus a compliance review of your existing marketing against the advertising rules that apply to you. It starts at $2,500 for a solo attorney and $3,500 for a firm.

Google Business Profile management starts at $450 a month, review management at $450, or $750 for both together. Social media management starts at $1,750 a month per practice area. Websites start at $5,500. Video runs $300 for a filmed and published piece on an annual agreement.

Those are twelve-month agreement rates. Month to month runs fifteen to twenty percent higher, which is the honest cost of keeping the option to leave.

Every engagement has a ninety-day proof gate. If it is not working by then, you walk with no notice period and no penalty, and month three is your last billed month. After the gate, ordinary exits take thirty days notice. We would rather earn month four than bill it.

We sit below the market average on purpose. Not because the work is thinner, but because we are a small U.S.-based team without an office tower to pay for, and we only work with law firms, which means we are not relearning your industry on your budget.

Frequently asked questions

How much does law firm SEO cost per month?

For genuine full-service work, most law firms pay between about $2,500 and $6,000 a month. Solo attorneys covering a single county sit at the low end, and firms competing across a metro area or in a crowded practice area sit above it. Published industry surveys put the overall average near $4,900, though that number includes large firms with budgets most practices will never need.

Is $500 a month enough for law firm SEO?

No. At that price there is no economic way to produce real content, technical work, and ongoing management. What you get is automated output that looks like activity in a report and produces nothing in your intake numbers.

How much does a law firm website cost?

A professionally built law firm website generally runs $5,000 to $15,000 as a one-time project, depending on how many practice areas and attorney pages it carries. Ours start at $5,500.

How long before law firm SEO pays for itself?

Meaningful movement usually takes four to six months, and most firms reach break-even somewhere around month twelve to fourteen. Competitive practice areas take longer. Anyone promising faster is either misunderstanding the work or misrepresenting it.

Should AI search optimization cost extra?

We do not think so. Many agencies now quote it as a separate retainer, often another $2,000 to $8,000 a month. It shares the same technical foundation and the same content as search optimization, so we run them as one program rather than two invoices.

What should a law firm budget for marketing overall?

It depends on your case values more than on any general rule. A firm whose average case is worth $6,500 can justify a very different budget than one averaging $1,500. The number that matters is what a signed case is worth to you and how many you need.
